Announcing the Birth of Anna Margaret Bruyn
Anna
Margaret Bruyn, daughter of Stephanie (Sharp) and Dan Bruyn arrived
early on Saturday, October 4th, 2008! Born at 3:52 a.m., she weighed 7
lbs 10 oz and is 18.5 inches long. She has a full head of gorgeous
hair and chipmunk cheeks that are already sore from being pinched!
(Photo posted at www.jillquigley.com in photo gallery, page 2)
Showing her perfectionist side, she decided to throw Stephanie into
labor right on her due date, October 3rd. Everything went well, no
major hang-ups or problems.
Anna Margaret's name is derived from a long list of wonderful women in
the Sharp and Bruyn families. Anna Johnson was Dan's great-grandmother.
Anna Sharp was Stephanie's great-grandmother. Dan's grandmother was
Helen Margaret Schmidt, while Stephanie's grandmother was Marguerite
Sharp. Additionally, Stephanie's cousin is Anna Reese Heuer and Dan's
mother's middle name is Ann. Adding on the Bruyn name covers all four
branches of the Sharp/Bruyn family tree - Sharp, Reese, Schmidt, and
Bruyn!
Stephanie says, “Thank you for your prayers and thoughtfulness during this exciting time!”

Correction: Polling Place Hours
My
thanks to John MacCormack, an astute reader of my newsletter, who
pointed out that in a Presidential election year, the polls open at 6
a.m. instead of 7 a.m. Sometimes it takes a village to write a
newsletter! Please note the correction below:
FALL GENERAL ELECTION Nov. 4, 2008
6 a.m.-7 p.m.
at your assigned polling place

Campaign Update: Signs, Signs, Everywhere a Sign
Jill’s Yard Signs
I
see that my signs have sprouted over the weekend. If you have a sign,
please go ahead and put it out. I’m told that some have already
disappeared. Just be certain to place them legally and we will replace
them for as long as our supply lasts!
Research Triangle Yard Signs
I
have yard signs and stickers in support of the 1/8 cent sales tax for
the Johnson County Research Triangle. Let me know if you would like
one; we’ll work out pick up or delivery.
Judge Selection Ballot Question Volunteer Opportunities
If you want to help with these, send an email to Melodee Blobaum at jocoforjustice@gmail.com by noon Friday, Oct 10th.
YARD SIGN DISTRIBUTION October 11, 2008 – 8:00 to 5:00 p.m. YARD SIGNS: Come to the parking lot of Building 32 in Corporate Woods, 9225 Indian Creek Parkway, pick up yard signs, and place those yard signs around Johnson County. We will assign you an area of the County. You can put out signs for 1 hour or 8, you decide. But we need 250 volunteers to do the job well. DOOR-TO-DOOR CANVASSING October 18, 2008 – 8:00 to 5:00 p.m. November 1, 2008 – 8:00 to 5:00 p.m. Come to the parking lot of Building 32 in Corporate Woods, 9225 Indian Creek Parkway, pick up 50 to 250 or more brochures and a neighborhood walking list and start going door-to-door to talk to voters and inform them about the dangers of turning our judges into politicians. You can walk door-to-door for 1 hour or 8, you decide. If you have a favorite neighborhood, we’ll try to get you assigned to that. Again we need at least 250 volunteers to do the job well, and more will be better. This is great for community service hours for your kids and is a lot of fun. People appreciate your dedication when you work this hard going house to house.
Another Voting Opportunity: Vote before Oct. 10!
Our
very own I-35/87th Street/U.S. 69 interchange in Johnson County has
been named a national finalist for America’s Transportation Award. This
interchange project is unique both for its design and its partnership
involving KDOT and the cities of Lenexa and Overland Park. It is one
of ten projects selected for consideration of the Grand National Prize
and the People’s Choice Award.
The
People’s Choice Award will be decided by popular online vote. To vote
for the People’s Choice Award, go to www.ksdot.org and click on The
People’s Choice Award. Vote now and often (before Oct. 10) to help put Kansas on top.
Besides the national recognition, if Kansas wins this category, Kansas
students will benefit through a grant awarded to UpLink, a Kansas
City-area effort that connects the workplace to the classroom to
further students’ skills and interests in math, engineering, technology
and science.
Details from the website:
“The $70 million interchange is located on one of the most heavily
traveled sections of highway in Kansas and is one of the first single
point urban interchanges (SPUI) constructed in the state. The new
design, which replaced a traditional diamond-shaped interchange built
in the 1960s, includes only a single traffic signal, resulting in fewer
delays, increased capacity and enhanced safety.
Also unique is the partnership arrangement between the Kansas
Department of Transportation and the cities of Lenexa and Overland
Park. The city of Lenexa was the lead partner for design of the SPUI –
a role KDOT normally has – and set the schedule. Designer of the
project was Parsons Brinckerhoff, consulting engineers, and the prime
contractor was Clarkson Construction of Kansas City. KDOT leaders say
the arrangement created more “buy-in” for the project and contributed
to the strong relationships that were forged. The high level of public
involvement and communication among partners, area residents,
businesses and travelers has also been cited for the project’s
success.
According to award sponsors, the Grand National Prize winnings will
support a graduate-level grant in the transportation field and the
People’s Choice Award will fund a community service project to
be selected by the winning state department of transportation. KDOT has designated UpLink.”
